American Gold Eagle Coins

The official gold bullion coin of the United States, authorized by the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985, is the American Gold Eagle Coin. It was first released by the United States Mint in 1986, and was offered in 1/10 oz., ¼ oz., ½ oz., and 1 oz. denominations. The United States government has guaranteed these coins to contain the stated amount of actual gold weight, in troy ounces.

The gold, by law, should come from sources in America itself, with an additional alloy of copper and silver so that a more wear-resistant coin is produced, that of .9167 (22 karat). On the American Eagle Gold coin is a full length figure of Lady Liberty, designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Lady Liberty’s rendition is one with flowing hair, holding a torch in her right hands and an olive branch in her left, with the Capitol building in the left background. The design on the reverse is by Miley Busiek. And depicts a male eagle carrying an olive branch flying above a nest that contains a female eagle and her hatchlings.
