American Gold Buffalo Coins
The American Gold Buffalo Coins are a 24-karat gold bullion coin, which on 22nd June, 2006, was first offered for sale by the United States Mint. The Buffalo coin has a face value of US$50. The initial price of the proof coin in 2006 was $800, and the price of the 2007 proof coin was $899.95.
The American Gold Buffalo Coin’s design is a slightly modified version of James Earle Fraser’s design of the Buffalo Nickel (Type 1), which was issued in 1913. There is a native American male depicted on the observe. Fraser had said that he had based the American Indian on a mixture of features from three Native American men – John Big Tree, Iron Tail, and Two Moons.
The animal on the reverse is a bison/buffalo, standing on a mound of dirt. Fraser’s nickel design is considered to be the most excellent among the designs of any US coin. The design of the American Buffalo Gold coin was also used on the 2001 Smithsonian commemorative coin. Currently, the Gold Buffalo coin is being struck at the West Point Mint in New York.
