Gold Coins come in all different shapes, sizes and patterns. With many famous names. The south african Krugerrand possibly the most famous gold coins from recent times, along with the Sovereign gold coins. The first Gold coins in existence were created by Egyptian Pharaohs around 2,700BC. although at the time they were more for decoration and gifts rather than currency.
Gold Coins are produced and collected from around the world. Most countries produce their own Gold coin collections for state occasions, commemorative pieces aswell as somthing new for the avid collector to collect. The Krugerrand were the first of this kind of production for the sole purpose to collect. But there are many famous ones since including the British Sovereign, Canadian Gold Maple Leaf and the American Gold Eagle and Liberty coins.
In July 2002, Sotheby's auction house smashed the previous Gold coins record with the sale of a 1933 , $20 value extreemly rare Double Eagle gold coin. Which sold for a record breaking $7,590,020, making it the most expensive gold coin ever sold to date. Ofcourse that is a little out of most peoples price range, but we can dream!.
